Antwerp Province

belgium_antwerp_emblem

Antwerp is the second largest city and municipality in Belgium and is the capital of the province of Flanders.  Located on the banks of the river Scheldt it is bordered by the countries of The Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. Antwerp is the second largest port in Europe behind Rotterdam and one of the 10 largest ports in the world.

Antwerp_diamondsDiamond cutting, polishing and trading is the crux of the city’s economy and Antwerp is renowned as the diamond capital of the world .  It is estimated that 85% of the world's rough diamonds, 50% of cut diamonds, and 40% of industrial diamonds are traded here annually.

Antwerp is also associated with creativity.  In the 16th and 17th century it was the home of the great masters Rubens and Van Dyck whilst in the 20th and 21st centuries, fashion designers like the world-famous Antwerp Six currently reside..

Antwerp is a favoured tourist destination.  It has the trademark cobbled roads, historical heritage, excellent bars and restaurants, diamonds, and chic shopping centres.  Beer lovers can have their own ‘heady’ time by trying all the typical Belgian flavours. The people of this city are also renowned for their easy-going lifestyles and their liking of good food.  For these reasons Antwerpens are known to be the happiest people on earth making for a relaxed and enjoyable ambience for visitors to the city.

The municipality comprises the city of Antwerp proper and several towns. It is divided into nine entities (districts):

Places to See

Antwerp Cathedral, Onze-lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, Cathedral of our Lady.Antwerp

Largest Gothic church in the Netherlands built on the original footprint of the old Roman church of Antwerp, building was started in 1352.  In the early 16th century, the city decided to stop working on the incomplete Antwerp cathedral and for this reason only one of the two towers was completed.   It contains some of Rubens best known paintings;  The Raising of the Cross, Assumption of the Virgin Mary and The Descent from the Cross.

Grote Market Heart of the old city the Grote market is surrounded by the Town Hall and the rebuilt houses of the Guilds or corporations.  Destoyed by fire in 1576 the houses were replaced by the town architect Hans Vredeman in the Flemish Renaissance style and renovated again in the 19th century. Grote Markt is one of the most pleasant squares in the city and is a traffic free pedestrian zone.   On warm summer days people choose this spot to enjoy a refreshing beer from one of the many terraces.

Cogels-osy lei : Cogels-osy lei is possibly the most unique and remarkable street in Antwerp and possibly the whole of Europe.  At the end of the 19th century two wealthy entrepreneurs, Joséphine Cogels Osy and her brother Baron Edouard Osy decided to develop a new area for the billionaires of the time to show off their wealth.  The art nouveau decorations were mainly cosmetic to impress passers-by whilst the inside of the houses is often traditional and old-fashioned.  Here you can see a French Chateau, a Venetian Palazzo, a Greek temple or eccentric Art Nouveau building all in close proximity to each other.  The area is also called the Golden Triangle of Art Nouveau. Three streets, Cogels-Osy lei, Transvaal Straat and Waterloos street host 170 monumental houses protected by the Flemish government since 1984.
